This past year I’ve decided to make a major change in my life and start using more natural beauty products, or when possible, even make my own. I’m not an environmentalist or a “crunchy” hipster but I have come to learn about the many benefits of doing things more green. You might also find this post on why I switched to natural organic skincare products helpful, too.
I realize it may seem like a waste of time. If it’s not for you – that’s fine! But if you’re curious about the benefits I’d love to share them with you.
1. It saves money.
I used to roll my eyes when I read about how much money I could save if I just made my own things. Who has time? Who wants to put in that effort? If I liked a product that was expensive I’d just budget for it.
And then I started researching ingredients in beauty products and realized they used ingredients I could easily get off Amazon, mix up myself, and perhaps even make better!
For instance, previously I wrote about the benefits of grape seed oil and how well-loved companies like Caudalie had a product called overnight recovery oil for $55 which was basically just grape seed oil, jojoba oil and rose essential oil. If you buy these products separately you can almost make an unending supply of your own overnight recovery oil.
Also, Sephora sells a shampoo scrub that is close to $50. FIFTY BUCKS. So I created my own for just pennies. Learn more about it in How to Use Epsom Salts to Purify & Add Volume To Your Hair.
2. Better for your health.
Now I get the eye rolls when I tell people how making your products are better for your health. Beware – I’m persistent! haha
But think about it: your skin absorbs 60% of what you put on it, which is the reason topical medication works in the first place. If you eat something bad for you at least it goes through the digestion process. What we put on our skin gets absorbed immediately into our systems.
Today’s beauty products are filled with chemicals to preserve the product, or give consumers a false idea it’s a miracle product when it only masks a problem. I won’t waste too much time being a doomsayer about chemicals in our products but if interested the information is out there. Instead try a DIY face moisturizer with NO chemicals like this DIY Face lotion for sensitive skin OR Washed Ghee for Beautiful Skin.
3. Better results.
For years I bought every acne product on the market to clear my skin and yet could actually see my skin getting worse. One day I realized I may actually be overdoing it and all my skin really needed was some tender loving care. You see, ingredients like soap actually dry out your skin. Your body then produces more oil to replenish it…causing more breakouts. This is why the Oil Cleaning Method is the best choice for clearing up acne and finding clear skin. (I’ll have to write a separate post on this sometime soon. You cannot use the OCM if you’re going to also continue to use chemical-laden products. Your skin needs an all-natural regime or it will get confused and break out still!)
For a healthy and clear glow to your skin, it just needs a healthy balance of oils. Speaking of healthy oils, I even make my own DIY Foundation that’s good for your skin!
4. You can customize your product.
This is my favorite reason to make my own products. We all have different skin issues whether it’s oil, dryness, acne or dullness and therefore need different products to address it. Of course companies will sell people on their skin-specific product but if you can make your own you can really customize it for YOUR needs.
I recently made my own DIY Rose & Almond Face Cleanser where I could decide how much almond oil to put in to make my skin glow, verses tea tree or grape seed oil to clear it up. I can also choose whatever scent I want. If I want tea tree I can have tea tree. If I want rose I can have rose.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED for Turmeric Mask:
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar. (If you have very sensitive skin replace this with witch hazel or even milk)
